Benefits of Tallow for Skin: Why This Traditional Moisturizer Is Making a Comeback

Tallow is rendered beef fat traditionally used in cooking, soap making, and skincare. When properly rendered and purified, grass-fed beef tallow becomes a nutrient-rich moisturizer that closely resembles the natural oils found in human skin.

Obviously, animal fat is by far the most bioavailable and natural product on the market. It comes free of any chemicals or fillers (grass fed is best in this situation) and is one of the easiest products to get your hands on. As the concept of farm to table continues to gain momentum acquiring beef fat is easier than ever before.

Since the farm to table movement entails shopping locally with the least amount of impact on the environment make friends with your local butcher. Your local butcher can be your best friend. Or depending on where you live you can even acquire your own cow from a local farm. This is also entirely dependant on your access to farms and storage situation. Cows are hefty and take up a lot of room.

Since tallow and sebum are both characterized by their high fat content one can speculate that tallow is beneficial to human skin. Amongst the fat content of both tallow and sebum, tallow also contains high levels of CLA (conjugated linoleic acid). CLA contains anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial and antiviral properties. Interesting to note is CLA’s ability to also protect against mammary cancer growth

Besides it’s pathology, tallow is also affordable, contains high levels of vitamins A,D,E and K. Not to mention it’s more stable than any other cooking oil and it’s simply pure and natural for all you hippies out there. But would you want to rub it all over your body? Hells yeah!

Why Tallow Works So Well on Skin

Let’s talk sebum. Sebum is secreted by your sebaceous glands. It is mainly composed of triglycerides and fatty acids (lipids). What else is made entirely of fats? Tallow. No carbs or proteins, just straight up fat.

Also important to note is that human sebum contains squalene, esters of glycerol, wax and cholesterol, as well as free cholesterol and fatty acids. Fatty acids and triglycerides make up the bulk of sebum content. Equally important is sebum’s role in photoprotection, antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory activity and delivery of fat-soluble antioxidants to the skin’s surface.

Many products on the market today have too many fillers and not enough natural ingredients. Animal fat is the purest and most natural ingredient on this planet. Nothing compares in terms of availability, affordability and sustainability. Not to mention it is the most raw ingredient you can get.

Is Grass-Fed Tallow Better?

Not all tallow is created equal. The quality of the tallow depends largely on the quality of the animal it comes from. Grass-fed and pasture-raised cattle are often preferred because they are raised on a more natural diet and are often part of more traditional farming practices.

For skincare, many people choose grass-fed tallow because they value the quality and simplicity of the ingredient. When properly rendered, grass-fed tallow creates a rich moisturizer that helps soften and condition the skin without relying on synthetic fillers or unnecessary additives.

At Resting Beef Face, we believe that simple ingredients matter. That’s why we choose high-quality tallow as the foundation of many of our products. By starting with quality ingredients, we’re able to create skincare that is effective, uncomplicated, and inspired by traditional methods that have stood the test of time.

Who Can Benefit From Tallow Skincare?

Tallow skincare can be a good fit for anyone looking for a simple, nourishing moisturizer made with minimal ingredients. Because tallow is rich in fatty acids and naturally occurring vitamins, it can be especially helpful for skin that feels dry, tight, rough, or easily irritated.

People with dry skin often love tallow because it provides long-lasting moisture without needing a long list of synthetic ingredients. It can also be a great option for those who prefer natural skincare, traditional ingredients, or products that feel rich and comforting on the skin.

Tallow skincare may also be helpful for people living in cold or dry climates, where wind, weather, and indoor heat can leave skin feeling depleted. For Canadian winters especially, a tallow balm or tallow body butter can help keep skin feeling soft, moisturized, and cared for.

As with any skincare product, everyone’s skin is different. If you have very sensitive or acne-prone skin, start with a small amount and see how your skin responds.

Why We Use Tallow at Resting Beef Face

At Resting Beef Face, we believe that effective skincare doesn’t have to be complicated. That’s why tallow is at the heart of many of our products. It’s a traditional ingredient that has been used for generations and remains one of the most nourishing natural moisturizers available today.

We choose tallow because its fatty acid profile closely resembles the oils naturally found in human skin, allowing it to absorb well and provide lasting moisture. Combined with thoughtfully selected ingredients like olive oil, castor oil, beeswax, and essential oils, tallow helps us create products that are simple, functional, and enjoyable to use.

Our goal has always been to make skincare with ingredients people can recognize and understand. Rather than relying on long ingredient lists filled with synthetic additives, we focus on quality ingredients that support healthy-looking skin.
